The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), or hippo, from the ancient Greek for river horse, is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae (the other is the Pygmy Hippopotamus.) After the elephant and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the third largest land mammal and the heaviest extant artiodactyl.
The hippopotamus is semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps, where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river and groups of 5 to 30 females and young. During the day they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water. They emerge at dusk to graze on grass. While hippopotamuses rest near each other in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land.

Occupying much of the western extremity of Bali, the Bali Barat National Park is one of Indonesia's best bird watching locales.
The park's rarest bird is the gorgeous Bali Starling, with its brilliant silver-white feathers and striking lapis eye markings. A victim of rampant poaching since the turn of the century, the starling now clings to the threads of existence in the wild. In 1989, about 30 individuals were tallied in the park, compared to over 700 in captivity across the globe.
Despite the starling's rarity, the Bali Barat is rich in over 160 other species. Yellow-vented Bulbul's are everywhere, as well as White-bellied Swiftlets, Sacred and Javan Kingfishers, and Drongos. On the north coast is a colony of Silvered Leaf Monkeys, and Pulua Menjangan, or Deer Island, offers a rich variety of marine life for snorkelers and divers. Dolphin watching is also a highlight of Bali, as large, playful schools thrive off the north coast.
There are a number of good guided treks through Bali Barat's jungles, though because of the starling's fragile existence no trekking is permitted on the Prapat peninsula and Menjangan Island.

Last year my family moved to Nepal. My father is a doctor. And he has to work in the local hospital in this country. I think it's important to see as much of a country as I can. A few week ago, I decided to go into the jungle and I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me. There was a lot of wildlife in the jungle but we were trying to find a lion.
We left the camp at six in the morning with two elephants carrying gut our equipment. We left early because it is unusual to find lions in the afternoon. They usually sleep in the heat of the day. Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. We climbed onto the elephants' back to get a better view.
A few moments later, we saw a lion in the distance. Kamal asked me to keep calm. We crept nearer and found a dead deer still bleeding. This was the tiger's prey. Suddenly I started to feel very frightened. We 'ward the tiger before we saw it. It jumped out like a flash of lightning. The lion was about five hundred kilos and four meters long. I looked into its eyes. I could feel its dignity. Suddenly the lion grabbed Kamal 's leg between its teeth, but I managed to pull Kamal away. One of our elephants ran at the lion and made it go back into the grass. We quickly escaped to let the tiger eat its prey. That night it was impossible to sleep.

The Man of Luck and the Man of Pluck

Once upon a time a king said to his minister, "Do you believe in luck?"

"Yes," said the minister.

"Can you prove it?" said the king.

"Yes, I can," said the minister.

So one night he tied up to the ceiling of a room a parcel, containing peas mixed with diamonds. He let in two men: one of them believed in luck and the other in human effort alone. The former quietly laid himself down on the ground; the latter after a series of efforts reached the parcel, and felt in the dark the peas and the stones. He ate the peas one by one, and threw down the hard, uneatable things at his companion, saying, "Here are pebbles for your idleness." The man below received them in his blanket.

In the morning the king' and the minister came to the room and bade each take to himself what he had got. The man of effort found he had nothing beyond the peas he had eaten. The man of luck quietly walked away with the diamonds.

The minister said to the king, "Sire,, there is such a thing as luck; but it is as rare as peas mixed with diamonds. So I would say, `To live for long only by luck can be awfully hard to do'."

Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia and what follows is a legend of how the city got its name.
A very long time ago, in the sea near the Javanese coast called Tanjung Perak, there lived a variety of sea animals. They all lived in peace and harmony with the exception of an octopus, called Cumi who could not get along with the other sea creatures. Cumi was very cruel.
One day Cumi went to one of the sea creatures’ home, a fish named Suro. Cumi tells Suro that one of the crocodiles, named Boyo, will soon attack Suro. Suro and Boyo are best friends and kind to each other, so Suro does not believe Cumi.
Cumi continues to lie to Suro but Suro does not believe him. Later, Cumi goes to the home of Boyo, the crocodile. Boyo also does not believe Cumi, but Cumi’s lies become so believable that finally Boyo believes what Cumi has to say. He gets upset and swims in a hurry to the home of Suro. Boyo is angry and very strong. He attacks Suro and wounds him. Suro remains calm and does not fight back. But knowing that Boyo never stop attacking him, Suro begins to fight. The fight becomes so fierce that the sea turns red with their blood.
In the place where they fought, a city called Suroboyo was built. Suroboyo is a Javanese word derived from the name of the two fighting sea creatures. Suro means brave and Boyo means danger. Suroboyo (which is now translated as Surabaya in the Indonesian language) means Brave in Danger.
